Perhaps the biggest and most well known of all mountain bike races. Pitting competitors not only against each other but against the sheer exhaustion of riding at 10,000+ feet above sea level. This event is for the bravest of riders and so popular that an entry is only granted through a lottery or by earning your place in one of the 5 qualifying races leading up to the main event.

Luckily for those of us in Texas, we host one of the 4 qualifying events. The Austin Rattler 100, which also happens to be the kick off to the entire qualifying series.

So what is it?

The Austin Rattler 100 is a 100km (62.13 miles) mountain bike race happening at Rocky Hill Ranch in Smithville Texas, east of Austin. The event date is set for April 13, 2013 at 7am. The race will start and finish at the Rocky Hill Ranch headquarters and will repeat the same 15.5 mile course 4 times. The course is an even mix of sweet singletrack and jeep roads, very similar to the legendary Leadville 100 MTB course. To get a feel for the course, see the video below.
